Talking blockchain games with PlayDapp

PlayDapp

We catch up with the creators of popular dapp games CryptoDozer & DozerBird

DappRadar currently tracks PlayDapp games CryptoDozer and DozerBird on the Ethereum blockchain. The simple, yet highly addictive game mechanics of both titles have meant both games now stake claim to regular places within the top 20 dapp games on DappRadar.

We spoke to PlayDapp about their future plans and their expectations for dapps in 2020.

Sung-Won Choi, Strategy Director, PlayDapp

What motivated you to create CryptoDozer and DozerBird?

With a long history in the PC & Mobile game market, PlayDapp recognized the potential of blockchain gaming. Our aim with PlayDapp is to create a dapp game portal that provides C2C Marketplace and E-Sports service. With team members responsible for the creation of one of the largest player marketplaces we intuitively understand the issues and solutions.

PlayDapp was also motivated by the power of interconnectivity and player ownership, and the legitimacy blockchain gives this. NFT assets gained through gameplay can be leveraged across our game portfolio. Our first successful test of this has been our first two games, CryptoDozer and DozerBird.

Recognizable and simple game mechanics

What protocol are you using?

We built our project on Ethereum protocol. The logic for this was that it has the largest number of wallet address and active users regarding games. It’s a stable & reliable smart contract platform utilizing ERC-721, which have many use cases. This was another main reason we decided to adopt Ethereum.

It also reduces the risk to develop our PlayDapp portal and game ecosystem. However, as we know, the scalability & gas fee issues of Ethereum remain the main obstacles. September 2019’s gas fee spike was a good demonstration of this issue. So, we are eagerly looking forward to the development and growth of this protocol and considering other protocols as well.

How are you planning to support the games over the next 12 months?

Thanks to our long history we understand how to support games and continually add value and we’re excited to take this knowledge into blockchain gaming.

PlayDapp will launch our C2C Marketplace, E-Sports Tournament in a few months. We are also planning to expand the game portfolio through in-house developed titles and 3rd party partnerships with highly recognized traditional game developers.

After launching the PlayDapp portal, gamers will be able to trade their characters and items in the C2C marketplace in addition to increasing the value of the NFT by leveling up, strengthening, and amalgamating them. Gamers can also participate and earn rewards in real-time PvP and tournaments using the acquired items.

Is 2020 the year of mass adoption?

It is hard to say if 2020 will be the year of mass adoption or not but there are positive signals such as Facebook, Samsung, and KAKAO, where existing global service providers are preparing blockchain services.

We hope this will raise general public understanding of how this tech can change their lives and how digital ownership should be. We strongly believe that blockchain technology can provide a next-generation gaming service. One that gives users true ownership of their in-game assets. We think this is the way it should be, and we are sure the gamers will agree.

Any advice for dapp developers trying to break into the ecosystem?

The industry is still nascent, and we are paving the way. There are not many use cases that we can benchmark and refer to. Interoperable game eco-systems will increase the complexity of game balance by a wide margin.

It’s important to think through all the aspects and side effects when changing something. This is especially important as in blockchain environments it is impossible to change the indexes on-chain and ownership of assets is in the users’ hands.

However, these challenges have incredible rewards with them, and we are resolving them and handing real ownership and value to players.
