A complete game guide to get started with Off The Grid, and learn how to earn HEX and GUN.
Without a doubt, Off The Grid has become the biggest sensation the blockchain gaming space has ever seen. This battle royale shooter is still in early access, but can already measure up to industry titans like Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone. However, Off The Grid is a blockchain game, allowing you to win now cosmetics, weapons, and loadout enhancing limbs. Moreover, in this battle royale you need to extract resources, allowing you to earn HEX and GUNZ. In this game guide we will dive into the basics to help you understand how to play Off The Grid, and how you can earn HEX and GUNZ.
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that gamers don’t have to interact with the blockchain at all. Everything is hidden in the background, and you only have to deal with tokens and NFTs if you really want to. In case you are against these crypto things, you can just consider them in-game currencies and skins, and you will have the exact same game experience. Secondly, Off The Grid looks and plays like a true AAA game, developed by industry veterans who worked on some of the biggest games ever created.
What is Off The Grid
Off The Grid is an extraction battle royale shooter. This means you’re dropped into a map, and then you need to collect resources and survive with them to reach an extraction point. Only when you reach the extraction point and survive the battle royale, you can claim the collected items and call them yours to keep. In this game there are 2 things you want to extract: HEXes and GUN tokens. HEXes are basically loot boxes, which will give you an item to improve your character’s loadout.
Collecting weapons, legs, consumables etc.
Extraction of items is important, because you start the game without any weapons. In Off The Grid you will need a primary weapon, secondary weapon and a sidearm. These weapons come in 4 rarities. These different rarities only difference from each other based on the value they represent in the game, and they amount of attachment you can connect. A common only allows one attachment, while an epic sidearm allows for 4 attachments.
Among the weapons you can also collect cyber-enhanced limbs, which allow you to run faster, do stomp damage, etc. In addition, there are different backpacks which allow you to store more items, or which can enhance your cybernetic powers, or perhaps speed up your ammo reload. You can collect weapons and other items from loot boxes, or steal them from dead players on the battlefield.
Every item in your inventory has a serial number, for example #714 out of 1,500,000.
Daily, weekly and monthly tasks with GUN tokens
In the top left corner of the main menu, you will be able to find your daily, weekly and monthly tasks. Completing tasks earns you GUN, you can use those to purchase weapons or other assets. GUN is the cryptocurrency token for Off The Grid. Currently the game is still in early-access, and GUN only exists on testnet. In the near future, GUN will become a cryptocurrency, and players can purchase GUN from the open market.
What is OTG Pro?
OTG Pro is a monthly membership, giving players of Off The Grid more loadout options, additional content, extra GUN, a 5x boost on the rate you earn, the ability to sell items on the marketplace (once you hit level 3), clan tags, pro status badge and soon they will offer OTG Pro Weekly Tournaments. If you want to go deep into Off The Grid, the OTG Pro membership seems like a no-brainer. In addition, the Battle Pass is included, allowing players to unlock special weapons and outfits.
OTG Pro costs like $10 per month, or you can pay using GUN. But these prices may chance or differ based on your location. Off The Grid is still in early-access, and pricing may therefore change of course.
How to play Off The Grid
Off The Grid is in development for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox One Series X. For this guide we played the PC version. When you deploy into the map, you get to fly around with a jetpack. You can use the WASD keys to move around, and the trick is to press “SPACE” just before you land, to smoothly transition into combat. If you fail to do so, it’s possible that your character will damage its legs. You will take fall damage, your legs will fall off, and you need to wait a few seconds for your legs to repair.
You can use your weapons and switch between they by press 1, 2 or 3. In addition, you can use the powers of your limbs by press Q, C or E. Also, keep in mind that “4” will activate your shield, which can of course come in handy during combat.
To move through the game, you can always find ziplines throughout the map. These will move you up into the air, allowing you to once again fly around the map. The edge of the map are blue, and you always need to make sure you stay within the game area, or you will be eliminated. Keep your eyes on the mini-map, because when people in your proximity shoot, you will see a red dot. Use this to your advantage.
About elimination, you play Off The Grid in teams or squads. When you get shot, you die. But you will be redeployed after a short waiting period. You’re only 100% eliminated from the game if everybody in your team has been killed. So as the last man standing in your team, it’s okay to run away and wait for your mates to come back.
How to extract HEXes
When you’re searching boxes in Off The Grid, you may find a HEX cube in a certain rarity. You can pick it up, and you will become easier to spot in the game. When you have this HEX cube you need to bring it to a HEX Extractor. After deploying your item into this red device, you need to stay alive for 60 seconds to manage to bring the asset home.
After 60 seconds it will be moved out of the game. That item will then be in your inventory. When you’re done with the game, you will find HEXes in your inventory. Inside these loot boxes you can find weapons, weapon skins, attachments, cyberlimbs or cosmetic items. Depending on the rarity of your HEXes, you have to pay a certain amount of GUN to open them. In the screenshot below you can see that a common box costs 0.25 GUN, while the uncommon ones require 0.5 GUN.
How does DappRadar fit into this?
Every time a HEX is opened, we register a transaction. Every time people sell an item for GUN on the marketplace, this also triggers a transaction on the blockchain. This means that you can track activity of the Off The Grid community through the metrics captured by DappRadar.
In the screenshot below, you can see that Off The Grid recorded 495,940 active wallets in the past 7 days. These accounts were responsible for almost 17 million transactions. That’s players extracting HEXes, opening HEXes and trading items with other players.
Through the historical activity chart, you can see the popularity of the game. It allows you to perhaps find a good moment to purchase items, because there may be less demand. Or you see lots of players moving into the battle zone, which could be a good opportunity to sell that rare item with a good profit. It all depends on your own tactics.
