On 2 December 2022, the highly anticipated Mist pre-alpha test went live, bringing exceptional quality to the Web3 gaming sector. Previously, players needed a Tier 3+ NFT or 100,000+ MIST tokens to participate in the pre-alpha test, but now, the game is free for everyone to enjoy during this stage.
In alpha testing, players without a Character NFT can also join the adventure using the Adventurer class. This versatile, jack-of-all-trades character offers a taste of the game’s diverse gameplay.
As Mist continues to expand, the team unveiled the Mist Chain to fulfill the growing needs of its gaming ecosystem. Notably, the EVM-compatible Mist Chain bolsters the gaming experience with seamless integration, swift transactions, and fresh opportunities for dapps and games.
What is Mist?
Mist is part of the new generation of open-world MMORPGs that are taking Web3 gaming into the future. In the world of Mist, there are two factions, eight races of fantasy creatures, and nine classes of character.
The game taps into the capabilities of the BNB Chain and gives users the chance to not only play the game, but also to own items and land within it. Players can roam freely or follow the narrative storylines.
When it launches, the full game will be available to download from Steam. However, the Mist framework is not reliant on Steamworks, and the development team has plans to launch the game on other platforms as well.
What is Mist Chain?
Mist is taking a major step forward with the launch of Mist Chain, a fully EVM-compatible blockchain designed to support all dapps, including games, with fast, low-cost transactions. Currently in its testnet phase, this innovation aligns with Mist’s mission to offer a myriad of potential benefits that enrich the user experience.
As Mist continues to grow as a metaverse, the Mist Chain plays a crucial role, as it offers full smart contract functionality, one-click MetaMask integration, and more.
Although the primary focus remains on the Mist MMO, the Mist Chain will be another key component of the Mist metaverse ecosystem, enabling smooth transitions for projects building on it.
Starting from 10 January 2023, Mist’s Pre-Alpha became accessible to all players, with no requirements to play. So everyone can download and test the Pre-Alpha version of the game.

How do you get started with Mist?
The full Mist game isn’t launched yet but is open for pre-alpha testing. You can download it on your Windows and Mac computers to explore the massive open world.
- Go to the Mist website.
Scroll down to ‘DOWNLOAD AND PLAY NOW’ and click on the Windows button.
- Agree to the terms
These terms cover the user’s acknowledgement that Mist is in its testplay phase.
- Download Mist
Once you’ve downloaded the launcher, open the application, agree to some further terms. Select the server closest to your location.
- Login with your wallet
You will need a Web3 wallet (such as MetaMask) to connect to the game. Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to play. Create your character and click on Enter. Now go and explore.
As mentioned above, there is a paywall for the pre-alpha, to keep players low and to reward the long-term community members.
To join the playtest, you’ll need Web wallet to play and one of the following two things:
- Tier 3 or higher Mist NFT
- 100,000+ MIST Tokens
How do you play and win the game?
As with other Web3 MMORPGs where players can roam freely and don’t necessarily need to follow the preset narrative, there are many ways to succeed within Mist. Some of them include completing quests. But there are other routes to take
- You can build up a strong faction and capture power in a map location.
- You can trade in-game assets for profit, which is how some players will play the game.
- You can earn in-game rewards, create usable items, then sell them on the open market.
- You can network, make friends, and enjoy questing together.
Web3 infrastructures create the opportunity for users to build their own storylines and spaces with Mist.
In terms of actually getting involved in the narrative missions, you should know about how to earn rewards in Mist. You should also be aware of the characters and classes in the game.
Options for earning in Mist
There are few ways to earn MIST tokens within the game:
- A previously mentioned, trade items for profit on the in-game marketplace.
- Create sandbox dungeons where other players can fight monsters and earn rewards. A percentage of the rewards go to the dungeon maker. The owner of the land on which the dungeon is built also gets their share of MIST tokens. So owning land and building a dungeon on it can be a great money spinner.
- Staking MIST within the game’s smart contracts returns yield. This is an easy way to earn passive income.
- Complete narrative quests to earn items and MIST. This is the most fun way to earn rewards. Slaying monsters and achieving victory is a prize in itself. Getting tokens on the side is a bonus.
Characters, classes and earning options
There are eight character races, each with different personality types and powers. Choosing your character race will depend on how you want to play the game.
There are eight classes to choose from. To play as one of these classes, you’ll need to purchase the associated NFT which unlocks its role. To play as the Crusader, for example, you need to hold the Crusader NFT.
However, you can begin your adventure for free by choosing the versatile Adventurer class.
The complete list of eight classes is as follows:
- Adventurer
- Bard
- Berserker
- Crusader
- Enchanter
- Priest
- Ranger
- Shapeshifter
- Witch Hunter
You can upgrade your class, with each upgrade giving your character’s damage powers a 3% uplift. Classes begin at Tier 1 and go up to Tier 5. Upgrades cost MIST tokens.
What makes Mist innovative?
Guilds and Factions
Within the Mist ecosystem, there are guilds and factions where separate players can combine forces and resources. This enables players to build a unit that is greater than the sum of its parts. But gaming guilds aren’t new. What makes them special in Mist?
Guilds and factions within the game can trade and battle together for rewards and resources. Ownership, buying and selling is enabled through blockchain technology. Furthermore, Mist is creating pre-made, narrative-aligned guilds which players can join and begin cooperating.
Tokens and Collectibles
The MIST token is the in-game currency. Trading within the gaming world is mediated with this token. As in the real world, prices vary across the Mist world, depending on supply and demand. There is a finite number of Mist tokens.
Collectibles come in the form of NFTs and are available for purchase at auction houses in the main cities. These are the in-game Mist marketplaces. Players fully own their NFT collectibles and can trade them for MIST tokens.
Metaverse
The metaverse is the immersive, 3D, interactive version of the internet where users can move through a carefully rendered environment. Mist is a small part of this mega infrastructure, and the game enables players to roam freely, follow missions, trade items, meet new people and make new friends. It’s the next generation of gaming.
