Axie Infinity is the most traded NFT collection of all time
Axie Infinity has smashed through yet another milestone figure, with its total NFT trading volume surpassing $4 billion. This is quite the achievement, as the collection launched in March 2018. In three years, the game with its character and land NFTs has become a play-to-earn gold standard and the most traded collection of all time.
While Axie Infinity has $4 billion in lifetime trading volume, other NFT collections also report billions of dollars in volume. The runner-up according to the DappRadar Rankings is the CryptoPunks collection with $2.61 billion in NFT trading volume. Bored Ape Yacht Club ranks in third place with $1.35 billion in lifetime NFT trading volume.
When it comes to the number of transactions processed by the collection’s smart contracts, Axie Infinity comes close to the top as well with 14,504,659 sales. However, Flow-based NBA Top Shot takes leadership with close to 15 million sales to date. Interestingly, when it comes to the number of processed sales, Ethereum behemoths CryptoPunks and BAYC struggle to keep up. This clearly highlights the paradigm that alternative blockchains allow for cheaper NFT transactions. These will therefore attract a broader audience, which comes with higher transaction numbers.

Axie Infinity pioneered the incorporation of NFTs into gaming platforms, and this innovation is paying off. With a record-breaking trading volume, the collection has become synonymous with the play-to-earn model.

Importantly, Sky Mavis continues to push on and develop the Axie ecosystem. Recently the team announced the upcoming Origin release which will build upon the already existing NFT collection. Origin will introduce a fully 3D design to the game, immersing players in a whole new virtual experience.
Additionally, the team works hard to bring functionalities for Axie land NFTs. Land comprises a big portion of the NFT sales for Axie, however, as of yet there is no gameplay or usability tied to these NFTs. Once land becomes a fully active part of the Axie ecosystem, these NFTs will attract even more attention. The team will introduce harvesting, crafting, trading resources and building and upgrading structures. Land gameplay will allow landowners to earn AXS, the governance token of the Axie Infinity ecosystem.
