Get more utility out of NFT profile pictures in the virtual world
Ever since virtual worlds became hot property in 2021, people have looked for and spent exorbitant amounts on NFT avatars for the metaverse. However, they only become truly useful when the avatar is put to use inside a digital landscape. Remember though, not every PFP NFT can be used in the metaverse. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the ten best NFT avatars for the metaverse.
In many cases owning an NFT gives you access to downloadable files that you’ll need to import into a particular piece of software. You might even need to fully convert them into a new format.
Every NFT project should have a step-by-step guide available to help you through this process. With this fair warning, let’s dive into our list of the 10 best NFT avatars for the metaverse.
Bored Ape Yacht Club
Let’s just start with the most popular NFT collection on the market, Bored Ape Yacht Club. If you’re reading this article, you will have already almost certainly heard of it.
These NFTs began life as simple, flat images. Now, Yuga Labs, the studio behind the project, has added more utility. Backed by the resources of VC firm Animoca Brands, Yuga Lab has created a virtual world for the Apes called The Otherside.
It’s a virtual world that will soon be home to a collection of the world’s biggest NFT projects. You can find out everything you need to know about The Otherside with our definitive guide.
Yuga Labs has designed the BAYC project so that holders have the ‘ownership and commercial usage rights given to the consumer over their NFT’. In effect, holders can use their Ape NFTs in any other compatible virtual world. These NFTs represent true ownership in the way blockchain technologists always intended.
The CloneX avatars by RTFKT Studios aren’t in the same price range as Bored Apes yet. But they are an integral part of the Nike web3 empire, so it won’t necessarily stay that way forever.
RTFKT Studios has already dropped a virtual “living” space as an NFT to Clone holders. and will soon enable the ability to import your clone into a virtual world.
On top of this, RTFKT has given Clone holders full commercial rights over their NFTs. This means anyone who holds one can use it in whichever creative endeavour they pursue. The company has also set up a Discord channel for 3D Files for users to download, customize and use across different platforms.
The Gala Games ecosystem is well-established as a dominant force in blockchain gaming. And platform’s Vox avatars are central to their mission.
At the moment, Vox holders can use their avatars in Gala Games’ VoxVerse. Simcity creator and computer games legend took over as the head of the project in December 2021.
Vox avatars also have some utility inside other Gala Games titles. Holders can use them to boost their daily earning in Town Star and Mirandus. Most impressively though, Vox owners can export a 3D file of their NFT and use it inside non-Gala Games platforms.
Similar to other NFT avatars in this list, holders of the bunnies from Fluf World can walk around in other virtual worlds.
The Flufs will be made for both voxel-formed landscape and worlds that support industry-standard VRM files. The team has already introduced Thingies, a type of pet.
In addition, they will allow Flufs to make Fluflets. More importantly, these avatars will be integrated with various games, there are DeFi options for passive income and the team will organize regular virtual parties.
Made by the team behind the Metakey NFT collection, we have the Metakrew. As things stand, these NFT avatars are the most affordable in this list.
They are currently only profile pictures but the project was launched with the explicit intent to create 3D avatars to roam across all virtual worlds.
Furthermore, the NFTs will become usable in an upcoming, standalone virtual world called New Ganymede. Gameplay footage was revealed in a trailer on May 1st, 2022. With the game still in its early stages, now might be your best chance to get involved.
The team behind CryptoAvatars, Polygonal Mind, were responsible for the 3D-stlye Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs. The collection caused a bit of stir when they dropped last year.
If you’re looking for a custom avatar, completely tailored to your liking and you have the cash for it, CryptoAvatars is the crew to reach out to.
Even though Meebits weren’t the first 3D avatars on the market, they did popularize the concept quite a bit. Meebits launched in May 2021 as a free drop to CryptoPunks holders.
When a Meebit NFT owner goes to the official website, they can download the 3D files for free. This allows them to integrate their Meebit into various virtual worlds.
As one of the first projects to introduce many of the collection utilities we now take for granted, it’s safe to say that Meebits started a trend.
This collection recently celebrated its first anniversary. And what a year the Deadfellaz project has had. The project started as 2D cartoon zombies before morphing into 3D-rigged avatars.
The team also invested in various virtual worlds, ranging from The Sandbox to Decentraland and Worldwide Webb. This means that the Deadfellaz community gets a wide range of virtual clubhouses across the metaverse.
Visitors of Imma Degen
Many projects launch their 3D avatars somewhere in the future, but Visitors of Imma Degen launched, fully-formed, in 3D mode.
VOID NFTs can already be used in various virtual worlds, and there’s more to come. The team will soon launch their own token and introduce NFT staking, and the team will update the 3D avatars to introduce facial expressions.
We end this list with Genies, an avatar project on the Flow blockchain. They have already partnered with many celebrities, and envision that everybody will have one or more avatars on the internet in the future.
Everybody can make their own avatars, and dress them up as they like. Interoperability is still very limited, but that’s something that will change down the road.
